Your work vehicle is a Corvette/911?

Some kind of truck thing?
Like this with fewer gears.

Quite close. Not a truck but a bus. Test drivers said that it was very tricky to shift. The bus was a former bus drivers’ education vehicle. Normally our city busses have automatic gearboxes.

Yeah. I have never seen any other 7-speed gear lever with a dog leg pattern.

What does C mean? Also does the little dot mean there’s a lockout on 5th and 6th?
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

Crawler gear- massively lower than 1st. Only practical use for it is a fully laden vehicle needing to do a hillstart.

Oooh, a Scania! We have those too plus Volvos. They all have ZF automatics.
We used to have Leyland buses with SCG semi automatic boxes. After that they tried Detroit Diesel two strokes which used to leak oil from every pore.

C is crawler. It’s a two range box. The dot is to point out that the gears to the right - 5 to 8 - are in high range. You engage neutral, release the clutch, slap the lever to the right and then engage what used to be first and is now fifth.

Snow is indeed a fact now. And I do live in Finland. We do test vehicles outside Finland too so some plates are misleading. Tomorrow we are fetching a British double decker from a ferry.

I have driven some Sisu trucks (local brand) that had this “slap the shifter” to go in low/high range. It’s quite easy to drive with those.
I think we have some city busses with Voith or Allison boxes too but most seem to use ZF.

With the exception of the 911 and Corvette, I think the only place one will find 7 (or more) gears are trucks. On those, 1st is often so short that is only used starting off with a heavy load. So the majority of the time, the driver starts in the upper left of “2" making the effective shift pattern a bit more ordinary.

Some people refer to it as the “bitch slap”.
Not me, obviously.
Top trivia: the Voith bus gearbox (they use it on trains as well) is a strange beast with its torque converter in the middle. The gearset on the input side transmits torque mechanically and the one on the output side works with the torque converter.
So, first gear: start off with the torque converter, gradually switch to mechanical drive
Second gear: first gear with all the torque transmitted mechanically
Third gear: direct
Fourth gear: overdrive.

I have driven with a heavy empty truck that had 12-speed semi automatic gearbox. Is started with the 5th gear frequently.
I think that 2017 Aston Martin Vantage V12 is going to have a dog leg 7-speed gearbox as an option. I’m not sure if they are selling those yet.
